Many Years Ago:
- In the beginning there was originally only one tribe. Over time, the one tribe divided into four - the Lilties, the Yukes, the Clavats, and the Selkies. The Lilties were stout and physically stronger than all the other tribes. The Yukes sacrificed the strength of their physical bodies to increase their magic potential. The Clavats toiled the soil. The Selkies valued speed and stealth for underhanded purposes. Moogles and Carbuncles roamed the land as well.
Originally, there were no monsters, and despite the differences between the tribes they lived in peace in a Golden Era. The capital of this Golden Era was Rebena Te Ra. The Lady Mio, a benevolent powerful figure, was primarily responsible for the goodness of people by consuming their memories. If one accumulates too many memories, that person will dwell on the past and bear its burden. If a person forgets too much, that person will learn nothing. So she serves as a balance by nibbling on memories, encouraging people to make new ones.
- One day, a meteor crashed into the earth, carrying with it the Meteor Parasite. The Meteor Parasite created Miasma, a gas that monsters thrive in, but is toxic to the tribes and moogles. The Golden Age ended abruptly as the land fell into chaos. Rebena Te Ra fell, becoming a smoldering ruin full of monsters. At this moment, from all the combined suffering, Raem was born, a sort of god opposite to Mio. Every few years, Raem devours the horrible and sad memories of the people, causing severe memory loss and even amnesia. He appears as a large golden phoenix.
- It was soon discovered that Myrrh could repel the Miasma temporarily. Myrrh is the recycled memories from Mio, with warmth and light, returned to the Myrrh trees. People built large crystals to store and radiate Myrrh to protect their cities. Without it, the Miasma would overtake the town and kill everyone in it. Cities like Alfitaria, Shella and Tida began to flourish again, protecting their cities with Myrrh. However, this Myrrh only lasted for a year before the protection wore off, so Crystal Caravans had to be sent out to collect more. Three drops of Myrrh would be enought to power the crystal for another year, and these caravans used a Crystal Chalice to store the Myrrh for the journey. The Chalice could also retain the four elements (wind, earth, fire, water) in order to permeate the Miasma, and allow the caravan to advance.
- Soon after, conflict between the tribes errupted, as the Lilties amassed iron from the Mine of Cathuriges to power a new empire, and the Selkies were expelled. They sought a new homeland in Conall Curach. In the end, they conquered a dragon but found nothing but the ocean at the end of their journey. They eventually settled in Leuda. The Lilties were eventually stopped by the Yukes, whose magical prowess overpowered them, along with the dwindling supply of iron from the mines. A new era of peace between the tribes began, and to celebrate, the Yukes built Veo Lu Sluice, which formed the Jegon River and turned the Fields of Fum into fertile farmland for the Clavats.
- At some point, the town of Tida was destroyed because the Crystal Caravan never returned.
- The Black Knight and a preacher named Hurdy set out to purge the land of Miasma, and after many years of research on the elements, discovered that the Lynari Desert hides the treasure of the fifth element, one that can penetrate all streams of Miasma. Using this, they accessed the Miasma stream to Mount Vellenge, the home of the Meteor Parasite, and nearly succeeded in killing it. However, Raem interceded and defeated the two, robbing them of their memories. The Black Knight now wanders the countryside seeking to reclaim his memories. Hurdy assumed the role of Gurdy, a charlatan who decieves his victims out of their money.
The Present:
- Soon after, a caravan from Tipa sets out on a journey, taking the exact same path as the Black Knight and Hurdy did, unbeknownst to them. However, unlike the two that came before, they use their good and fond memories to defeat Raem. Raem, unable to accept defeat, possess the body of Mio, but is once again defeated. Finally, they kill the Meteor Parasite, which eliminates the Miasma forever.
